My Cures for the Common Cold

Tis the season… for getting sick.  If like me, you hate cold weather, the final nail in the coffin is getting a nasty cold that lingers for days, even weeks.  When you get a cold, you might be able to function, but it’s harder and you definitely won’t be happy.  Everything feels like it’s in slow-motion, and energy levels are dangerously low.

When we’re babies, our parents are encouraged to let us learn how to self-soothe, the first step in learning how to take care and comfort ourselves.  It’s even more important as adults, when we have jobs, relationships, so much to handle that shutting down completely just isn’t an option.  Taking time for ourselves, taking care of ourselves, is vital every day, but especially when we’re sick.

I’m on the tail end (hopefully) of a nasty cold right now, so I thought I’d share my tips and musts for combatting a cold and self-soothing:

Comfort is key.  My baggiest sweats, no makeup, and my fluffiest blanket.  Only the best when I feel my worst.

Treat yourself.  I like to do a little online shopping when I’m sick.  And when I’m not sick.  Don’t judge me.  But it’s nice to have something to look forward to when you feel like you’ll never feel healthy again.

Take a break… Nothing feels worse than forcing yourself to go to the gym, the grocery store, even to leave the house.  It’s ok to hole up in a blanket fort and watch endless SVU episodes.  Actually, that’s ok whether you’re sick or not.

…But Don’t Shut Down Completely!  Don’t forget that the world will have kept on spinning while you’ve been away.  Your friends, family, and co-workers rely on you for various responsibilities, and it’s important to be able to jump back in.
